Honors

HONORS 222

This honors course granted me the opportunity to explore the Burke and look behind the scenes at how the museum curates its collections. I was able to visit each of the department's archives as well as hear from employees in a variety of roles at the museum. This was an amazing experience and, so far, my favorite class I have taken at UW. This course opened my eyes to all the work that happens to form an exhibit as well as to maintain the items on display.

GIS

ESRM 250

In this course I learn how to use GIS software to generate maps in environmental context. By utilizing data gathered in Pack Forest, I was able to learn the ins and outs of GIS. This class definitely challenged me and often led me to feeling quite frustrated. However, throughout the quarter, I was able to adapt my learning methods to promote gaining a better grasp of the program. I did this by watching online tutorials and asking the professor for help when possible. In the end, this class taught me incredibly useful content as GIS is a common program used by environmental analysts and I will continue to use it throughout my academic career.

Environmental Studies

ENVIR 100

This course was one of my introduction classes for my major which allowed me to brush up on the basic ideas of environmental justice. Throughout the course, we reviewed what sustainability means and how it is intertwined with environmental justice. For the final, I completed a research project that detailed how Seattle's greenspaces are inequality distributed with more in the "nicer" neighborhoods (which have been defined through historic redlining). Overall, this course was a wonderful introduction to my major specific classes and helped me grasp the basics of environmental justice.
